Environmental Management Practices

Because of its constant concern with the environment, Embraer sets up and documents procedures and plans for monitoring and measuring, from time to time, the main aspects of the Company's operations and activities that may have a significant impact on the environment, in addition to other procedures and plans to improve the quality of life at work and lessen the environmental impact.

PECS – Embraer Selective Collection Program

In 1998, Embraer initiated its selective collection program, involving all the sectors in the Company.

Since then, several improvements have been carried out, among them, the qualification of the collectors and employee training.

The collection involves newspapers, magazines, cardboard, plastic cups, PVC pipes, glass in general, debris from factory sweeping, metallic parts, aluminum cans, cloths and rags contaminated with inflammable materials, batteries (including cell phone ones) and fluorescent lamps - even the last two items undergo recycling.

The Company has placed color-coded containers in its facilities for the collection of every kind of residue generated; they can be made of fibers and recyclable, as shown in the pictures.

Program Objectives:
- Broaden the environmental awareness of employees, partners and others in the Company by recycling residues;
- Stimulate and reeducate for the suitable and spontaneous disposal of recyclable residues;
- Comply with the environmental management policy;
- Safeguard the Company image;
- Collect financial resources from the sales of recycled materials;
- Exchange recycled materials for consumable ones in order to lower the volume of trash generated inside the Company.

Industrial Residue Management
The generation of solid residues has been the topic of various arguments and debates in many companies, always held in an attempt to find a technically and economically viable solution for its management. The requirements for the solution to this problem call for investments, not only for making suitable internal areas assigned to receive, sort and store these residues, but also for their correct disposal.

Currently, Embraer has an area suitable for the receipt and final destination of residues such as solvents, lubricating oils, batteries, paint remnants and biological slush, whether by incineration, recovery, recycling or another method of disposal - always in full compliance with CETESB (São Paulo State Environmental Sanitation Technology Company) specifications.

The collection of residues such as paper, cardboard and plastic is carried out separately from the others, because some of them undergo recycling.

Depot for the Storage and Sorting of Industrial Residues – DETRI
It is located in a 450 m2 area and is provided with segregation stalls and containment gutters, in case of leakage. This project was approved by CETESB.

Area for Metal Shaving Remains
It has the objective of improving the existing storage operation methodology and handling of oil-impregnated waste, thus preventing contamination risks.

Recycling of Residues
- Vegetable oils, generated in the food preparation process in the restaurants, are consigned to a company, qualified by the Environment Sector, to be made into soap.
- Paper, generated in the administrative operations of the Company, is recycled and used for internal communication; newspapers and PEC containers are also recycled.
- Paper towels, generated by hand washing, are recycled and made into other types of paper.
